7. Will the ECGS Clamshell Bushing work on an AWD Toyota?
No. The ECGS Clamshell Bushing is for applicable Toyota 4WD vehicles with a selectable 4WD system and front clamshell differential. It is not for full-time AWD or non-selectable full-time 4WD applications.
If your vehicle does not have a way to shift between 2WD and 4HI/4LO, this specific driver-side needle bearing vibration issue generally does not apply.
8. Is this an issue on 2WD Toyota trucks or SUVs?
No. Toyota 2WD trucks and SUVs do not have the front clamshell differential or driver-side front CV axle needle bearing involved in this issue.
9. The Toyota dealership says I need a whole new front differential. Will that fix it?
A replacement front differential may temporarily eliminate the noise if the old driver-side needle bearing was worn, but if the replacement differential uses the same factory-style needle bearing design, the same issue can return later.
If the rest of your differential is healthy and the vibration disappears in 4HI, replacing the driver-side needle bearing with the ECGS Clamshell Bushing is usually the better targeted repair. 10. My Toyota is stock. Do I still need the ECGS Clamshell Bushing?

11. Does lifting my Toyota make the needle bearing problem worse?

13. Do I need to replace my CV axle at the same time?

If you are already replacing a CV axle, it is a great time to install the ECGS Clamshell Bushing because the axle is already coming out.
14. Do I need the ECGS Complete Kit or just the bushing?

It depends on your mechanical experience. Many mechanically capable Toyota owners install it at home, and the job can be done with the vehicle on the ground. However, you will be removing the driver-side CV axle, extracting the factory needle bearing, installing the bushing, and replacing the seal.

16. What tools do I need to install the ECGS Clamshell Bushing?
The easiest path is to buy the ECGS Complete Kit for your specific vehicle. It includes the specialty removal and installation tools needed for the bushing and seal. You will still need basic hand tools such as a wrench, hammer, punch, and magnet.
Do not assume a generic bearing puller or a tool from a different Toyota clamshell size will work. Use the correct ECGS kit for your vehicle.
17. Do I need to drain the front differential fluid?
No, you do not normally need to fully drain the front differential for this job. Some gear oil may come out during the repair, so check the fluid level afterward and top it off as needed.
18. What sealant should I use on the axle seal?
Use a sealant that is compatible with gear oil or transmission fluid. Permatex gear-oil-safe sealants are commonly available at parts stores. ECGS uses Dowsil 3-0115 automotive sealant in-house.
19. What grease should I use on the axle seal or seal spring?
Any quality axle, bearing, or assembly grease is fine. The grease is mainly used to help retain the seal spring and keep components in place during installation.
20. Do I need to replace the driver-side axle seal?
Yes, replacing the driver-side axle seal is strongly recommended. The seal is commonly damaged during removal, and replacing it while the CV axle is out helps prevent leaks after the repair.

21. Do I need to replace the passenger-side bearing too?
No, not for this issue. The common needle bearing vibration problem is on the driver side. The passenger side of the Toyota clamshell differential is supported differently and does not see the same type of load as the driver-side needle bearing.
